That said, Braudel, who was writing in the early sixties, does come over all condescending sometimes in discussing ‘primitive’ peoples. A History of Civilizations by Fernand Braudel. Maybe it was the context and examples being taken from French history and experience that are often less well known to Americans and the British perhaps as well. Some of this is interesting, but not interesting enough to bother with the rest. It is also notably one of the shortest chapters in fernnand book.
There is a large amount of introductory material in the book. I am aware of geographic determinism, but I only believe it up to a certain point. Feb 05, Leo Walsh rated it really liked it. Braudel was more than a bit of a snob, too, and many cultural references in this book, originally written inare politically incorrect.

There was a problem filtering reviews right now. In fact, his insights — along with Ronan and Needham’s The Shorter Science and Civilization in China made up my entire exposure to modern “historical thought” in college. Not an easy read, but not terribly difficult, either.

It seemed to me that he took the viewpoint of someone above the fray and included economics, arts and other important aspects of civilizations to a greater extent than usual, and put it all in some sort of context, including where different civilizations come into contact. After an introductory section examining the nature of cultures and civilizations, their continuities and transformations, Braudel surveys broad historical developments in almost every corner of the globe: I have read it in Russian translation.
He fought the French educational establishment to broaden the fernanr of history to include material from sociology, anthropology, geography, etc. Gernand chapters about Africa and Latin America were markedly different.

Instead, he takes what he deems to be the major civilizations as of — Islam, Africa, Asia, and the West — and looks at them in a more well-rounded manner, incorporating demographic, sociological, economic and cultural information into the description of the various societies.
This should not be missed for those interested in history. A leading member of the Annales school, he rejected a narrow focus on Western warfare, diplomacy, and power politics, and opened up economic and social history to influences from anthropology, sociology, geography, psychology, and linguistics.
