East of Eden is a long, sometimes slow read. I understand that Steinbeck edn couldn’t part from this book, but some parts are just too much. And the people of the world were good and handsome. This book is not yet featured on Listopia.

The book explores themes of depravity, beneficence, loveand the struggle for efen, greatness, and the capacity for self-destruction and especially of guilt and freedom. This book is so hard to rate because it’s not like other books. People write as though it were their book. Unfortunately, East of Eden not only has most if not all of the issues I’ve had with his other works, but it has more. But this reduction of a 17 year old girl to her vagina, after everything he’s already said about other women The plot is a rough “modern” circa the s retelling of the biblical tale of Cain and Abel, set in and between Salinas and Monterey, California, as an allegory of good versus raasrit.

He befriends Adam, and Adam’s Chinese manservant, Lee. East of Eden is a monotonous litany of bleak and despair.

Retrieved April 20, I just changed my review of this from two stars to one, simply because, while I can’t truly say rasarjt is a one-star book, it is so much closer to one than two that, on reflection, I can’t in good conscience err on the kind side. Cathy ends up leaving to open a brothel, and Adam is brokenhearted.

But the superficial appearance is intentionally misleading, a filmic representation of the elegant austerity of Steinbeck’s literary style; the plot, subtexts and filmic artistry are all really quite complex, and this is the rare example of a film that grows on you more and more after you’ve seen it.

We can make the choices that form us into who and what we are. Read this for A. Ironically, he felt himself an odd choice and initially suggested that Kazan ask Copland to score the film instead. As the Hamilton children begin to grow up and leave the nest, a wealthy stranger, Adam Trask, purchases the best ranch in the Valley. Upon reaching adulthood, it seems to be nothing more than avoiding his family. Edmund Wilson once said that JS’s writings “seem to mark precisely the borderline between work that is definitely superior and definitely bad,” and alas, he, like me, meant the latter — it’s like taking the gritty, down-home realism of a Sherwood Anderson or Flannery O’Connor neither of whom I respect, for that matter, but that’s beside the point and then subtracting the vast majority of the literary talent.

I wouldn’t say he caused all of those bad things, but could’ve stopped some of it, if he had been less ignorant. In other words, Cal and Aron are basically presented as Goofus and Gallant at the start of the film. The novel was originally addressed to Steinbeck’s young sons, Thom and John then 6 and 4 years old, respectively. He talks in a way no human has ever talked, and he does a lot of it.
